Foundation of the Criminal Mind
(Kallaugher)

Foundation of the criminal mind

Kid grew up real religious
he felt guilty like he should
church sold him on salvation and damnation
thought he was born to be no good
they taught him to place faith
and never forget
god’s mercy loving to each
he had to hide so many needs
so far away
buried somewhere inside
deep out of reach

Foundation of the criminal mind

After years of sad contrition
twisting slowly in the holy wind
he’s put it all behind this instant
knife-blade sharp
stiletto thin
The kid’s smiling like a virus
sweat does drip and it does stain where it falls
but there’s singing in his temples absolution at last
god’s vengeance stalks his halls
as he whispers to her
come close
or I’ll take you by surprise
don’t make me have to force you
I’d gladly shut your eyes
I don’t care where you think you’re going it’s not the first time you’ve been wrong there’s a darkness waiting, calling to you the coda to your song

Foundation of the criminal mind

There’s no mercy on earth
from the moment of birth
there’s no mercy
no mercy on earth
from the moment of birth
there’s no mercy
and there’s no escape from Babylon
no escape from Babylon
just no escape because
jah doesn’t care jah doesn’t care jah doesn’t care about you

Originally written for a radio serial called “One Step Behind: The Story of One Man’s Battle Against the Second Thermodynamics,” this one was included in The Hormone’s “Son of Sam Trilogy,” which also featured “Why Don’t You Dance With Me?” and “Stacy.” The DiCoupes resurrected it for a third life by itself. Aside from some breath control problems by the singer, it’s got a nice sense of dread — if we do say so ourselves.
